All students will discuss standardized testing during their junior meeting with the college counselor. Please reach out any time with questions!
Test Optional Schools
A growing number of colleges and universities do not require standardized testing as part of the admissions process. For more information and a list of such schools, visit: fairtest.org
Testing Locations
FHS offers the PSAT to sophomores and juniors in the fall. If you are wondering whether you should take the PSAT or not, please reach out to your counselor.
FHS does not host the SATs or the ACTs. Students who wish to take those must register on their own through the College Board (SATs) or ACT.org.
Standardized Testing & College Admissions
Test-optional colleges do NOT require standardized testing: Find them at fairtest.org.
Test blind or test free colleges will not accept standardized testing scores at all.
Colleges that require testing usually require either the SAT or the ACT. All colleges will accept either the SAT or the ACT and there is no preference for one or the other.
- The SAT is only offered digitally. It has two sections: math and reading/writing.
- The ACT currently is administered on paper and has four required sections: English, math, reading, and science. There is also an optional writing section. However, the ACT is changing over the course of the 24-25 school year. Starting in Feb. 2025 the ACT will be offered online and on paper. Starting in April 2025 the online ACT will be a "Core ACT" with English, Math, and Reading sections and an optional Science section.
- Some students do better on the ACT, some do better on the SAT, and some do the same on both.
