School-Issued iPads

Beginning August 2026, all students in grades 9–12 will transition from laptops to school-owned iPads. Personal devices will no longer be permitted during the school day. This change aligns with new state law and School Board Policy JICJ. It allows teachers to monitor and manage device usage, ensuring technology enhances learning without increasing screen time. We understand this is a significant shift, and we made this decision thoughtfully to best support our students.

Why This Change is Happening

  • Better focus for students: School-managed devices allow teachers to monitor and limit non-educational use.
  • Balanced tech use: The goal is to enhance learning tools, not to increase overall screen time.

Every Student will receive a school-issued:

  • iPad with a charger
  • Keyboard case
  • Smart pencil

Frequently Asked Questions about High School iPads

Can students bring their own devices to school? No, students cannot bring any personal devices from home (per State Law Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4013 and Falmouth Schools Policy JICJ; updated April 15, 2026).

Which grades will receive iPads? All high school students will receive an iPad at the start of the 2026/2027 school year. Rising 9th graders will receive the same iPad they used in 8th grade after a system update and data purge.

Will students receive keyboards? Yes, the iPad students receive will be in a case with a connected keyboard.

Will students receive a smart pencil? Yes. Please note there will be a replacement fee if a student loses their smart pencil.

Will students bring their iPad home? Yes, once the use fee is paid. 

Will students receive a charger for their iPad? Yes. The expectation is that every student will bring a fully charged iPad to school everyday. 

What apps will be on the iPads? Teachers and members of the tech department are currently identifying which apps to put on student iPads. Many of the online resources you currently use in classes are available as apps and will not disrupt learning experiences.

What if my student has a 504 plan or IEP plan accommodation that allows them to use their cellphone during the school day? The school will ensure that your student’s identified need can still be met. Plans that require a cell phone will still be able to use their cell phone. Please reach out to your student’s case manager or their 504 coordinator with any specific questions.
