SUPERINTENDENT NOTES

May all members of our community be continuing to take good care of themselves and others in the wake of last week’s horrific events in Lewiston. We were saddened to learn that one of the victims, Bill Brackett, played on Falmouth High Schools’ baseball team between 1993 and 1994. While Bill did not attend Falmouth Schools, he was well known and cared for in Falmouth and a trailblazer for the deaf community. 
 

Thank you to our staff, and all those involved, for the successful collaboration that went into the welcoming of our students back to campus on Monday morning. The routine, the rhythm, and the learning and laughter that occurred in our school community this week was an important step in reconnecting and taking care of one another. These wonders could not have occurred without skillful work and care-filled planning.  The pictures below capture just a few precious moments from our week. 
 

As events in Lewiston, the Ukraine, the Middle East, and elsewhere continue to impact our community, Falmouth Public Schools continues to support respectful and constructive engagement on the challenging and complex matters before us. Our zero tolerance for words or actions of hate or intimidation, including, but not limited to, expressions of racism, anti semitism, and Islamophobia exists for this reason; and reports of such conduct will be investigated and acted upon pursuant to our policies.  In our schools we persist in our work toward greater tolerance, care and admiration for each other and for our many identities and perspectives.
 

As we set our clocks back this weekend, and gain an hour of rest and additional early morning light, please consider connecting with our school community through one of the several events upcoming this month (see below).   With strength, courage and compassion we will navigate these challenging times together.

SCHOOL BOARD

November 6th School Board Workshop

This month’s School Board Workshop will take place on Monday, November 6th, at 7:00 pm in the High School Theater. Following a recognition of the High School Boys Golf State Champions, members of the state legislature representing Falmouth will confer with Board members about upcoming bills, and hear from the school about ongoing opportunities and challenges.  This meeting will be recorded and the video will be posted following the meeting. Special Board Workshop with Lawrence Alexander rescheduled for November 29th

The Workshop with Equity and Inclusion consultant, Lawrence Alexander, originally scheduled for this past Monday has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm in the Falmouth High School theater.  During this live-streamed event, members of the Board will have a discussion about equity and inclusion in Falmouth Schools, and community members attending will have the opportunity to ask questions.  If you  wish to submit a question , please complete this form up until 11:59 pm on Sunday, October 29th.

The Theatre Company at Falmouth High School has done a wonderful job with their production of “The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical”. Opening Night was a hit—don’t miss your chance to see this wonderful production! Shows run through this weekend:

Veterans Day Concert

Students from Falmouth High School Concert Band, Concert Choir, and National Honor Society will join together again this year to celebrate our Community Veterans. Please come out and join us as we honor our best and brave! There will be an assembly of readings and music, followed by a reception for the Veterans and students, Thursday, November  9th, at 1:25pm, in the high school theater. Dear Falmouth Schools Staff, Students, and Families,

I am writing to let you know that our current plan is to have school on Monday, October 30th with a one-hour delayed start for students.  Reconnecting and providing routine for our students and ourselves are important steps for our community.  

While police activities related to Wednesday’s violence in Lewiston are still ongoing, the Falmouth Police Department has affirmed that there is no elevated safety concern for our community at this time, and supports our return to regular operations. Other Cumberland County school districts are also planning to reopen Monday, and we don’t expect staffing to be an issue. Should there be any status changes with regards to safety or staffing, we will certainly revisit our plans. 

As we resume school operations on Monday, our School Resource Officers (SROs) and other members of Falmouth PD will have a strong presence on our campus, to provide additional comfort and assurance to our community; and we will be vigilant about adhering to our regular safety precautions. 

School staff have made developmentally appropriate plans to greet and support students, and school counselors and social workers will be available to provide support for those requiring additional assistance. The one-hour delayed start for students on Monday morning will allow our staff time to finalize preparations for opening the buildings.

There will be no Principal Notes this week, but building leaders will be providing more information about school plans for Monday over the course of the weekend. 

At this time, please be aware of some date changes:

• The Southern Maine Athletic Association (SMAA) has postponed all competitions originally scheduled for this weekend - new dates will be announced.

• The High School Theater Productions of the Lightning Thief scheduled for tonight and tomorrow have been postponed - new dates will be announced.

• The Elementary School field trip to Portland Ovations Performance for grades 1 and 2 has been canceled.

• The meetings and School Board Special Workshop with Lawrence Alexander scheduled for Monday 10/30 have been postponed - a new date will be announced.

As we make these plans, we wish to acknowledge, honor, and respect that members of our school community have been directly and indirectly impacted in different ways by the events in our region, and will have different concerns and needs moving forward.   Please continue to access the resources on our website (https://www.falmouthschools.org/community/coping) and reach out to building administration as needed.

Thank you for your collaboration, patience, and understanding as we work to make the best decisions for our community and our schools.  Unless something changes, you will not hear from me over the weekend.  The district will send out reminders about the one-hour delayed start for students on Monday.

Good evening,

I’m reaching out tonight to update you regarding plans for the possible reopening of our schools tomorrow, Friday, October 27.

As you know, we canceled school today as a precaution while police searched for the person responsible for the terrible violence in Lewiston.  We continue to work with the Falmouth Police Department to monitor the situation. 

If this situation is resolved on Friday morning, we will reopen our schools on their normal schedules. However, if needed, we will cancel school again tomorrow as a precautionary measure. 

Either way, we will send you a message informing you of our decision before 5:15 a.m. on Friday.

If our schools reopen tomorrow, our school staff are prepared to support students in their morning meetings, advisories and crews. School counselors and social workers will be available to support those requiring additional assistance when schools reopen. 

We continue to encourage you to talk with your students. We have added resources to our website at https://www.falmouthschools.org/community/coping to assist with those conversations.

Good afternoon,

We continue to monitor the current search that is underway for the suspect in the Lewiston shootings. I have been in frequent contact throughout the day with our law enforcement partners.  

It is too early at the moment to definitively say whether or not we will be able to safely return our students to school tomorrow morning.  While we all desire a return to normalcy right now, we want to make a decision that is best for students, staff and families in our district.

In the event that the situation is under control this afternoon or this evening, we will be fully prepared to have students back in the buildings tomorrow.  Our building and school-based crisis teams have met throughout the day to develop communication and support plans for staff and students.  In addition, the Falmouth Police Department is committed to being present at the schools and on campus tomorrow to support returning students.

The Maine Department of Education has recommended some talking points and resources when communicating with children about tragic events:

• Early elementary school children need brief, simple information that should be balanced with reassurances that their school and homes are safe and that adults are there to protect them. Give simple examples of school safety like reminding children about exterior doors being locked, child monitoring efforts on the playground, and emergency drills practiced during the school day.
• Upper elementary and early middle school children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance processing the incident. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to ensure their safety.
• Upper middle school and high school students will have strong and varying opinions about the causes of violence in society. They will share concrete suggestions about how to prevent tragedies in society. Emphasize the role that students have in maintaining safe communities and schools, communicating any personal safety concerns to school administrators and parents/guardians, and accessing support for emotional needs.

• Monitor and assess impact: Students and colleagues will be affected in different ways. We do not know how this event has affected people – directly and/or indirectly. Continue to assess the impact of the event on those around you.
• Be mindful of self-regulation to assist youth in maintaining a level of safety and connection.

• If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 988.

Shootings such as this tragedy evokes many emotions—sadness, grief, helplessness, anxiety, and anger. Dear Falmouth Schools Community Members,

It is our understanding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the individual believed responsible for the devastating shootings in Lewiston last night.  After consultation with the Falmouth Police Department, we have decided Falmouth Public Schools will be closed today, Thursday, October 26th. Please be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.  Our campus will be closed (no staff/students).

Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and others impacted by this traumatic event, including members of our own community.

Violence of this nature is difficult to make sense of, for all of us. We also know that our students may be particularly shaken by this event and have concerns and questions. We have prepared some online resources for staff and families with crisis hotline information, as well as tips for talking with children. 

Please do not hesitate to reach out to school principals or to me if you have additional questions or need any assistance in supporting your child. 

We are hopeful that this situation will resolve quickly and will provide additional information as we know more.

As September comes to a close,  I want to thank you for a great start to the school year.  Our Open Houses were very well-attended, and we appreciate the time invested by staff and families/caregivers. We continue to encourage students to take part in the range of clubs, activities, and athletic programs offered through the schools.  
 

We are very pleased to announce that Falmouth Public Schools has retained consultant Lawrence Alexander to support our efforts to create “a culture and climate that is safe, equitable, and foster wellness” (Strategic Compass Point: East).  Mr. Alexander has provided trainings for Maine School Superintendents’ Association, and works with a number of area districts including MSAD 51 (Cumberland-North Yarmouth) and RSU 21 (Kennebunk). He is recognized as an expert on equity practices in school settings, and we look forward to his work with our Board, students, staff, and families in the months to come. We’ll be sharing more information in the days ahead.
 

The October School Board Workshop will be held on Monday, October 2nd in the Falmouth High School Library at 7:00 pm.   This month’s meeting will focus on a presentation and discussion of the science of reading and Falmouth Schools’ curriculum, instruction, and assessment related to reading. We welcome members of the community to attend, and have included time for community questions about the topic as part of the workshop.  Additionally, we are pleased to share that our new technology will be used to film this workshop, and we’ll post the video following the meeting.  See the School Board Page of the website for additional information about Board activities.

School Closure Notification Plan
Should there be a school closure, notifications and updates will go out to all parents, guardians, caregivers, and staff via email, phone, and text based on the contact information we have in Powerschool.  Additionally, information will be available on various local television and radio outlets as well as on the Falmouth Schools website. 

Town of Falmouth Storm Preparedness
Falmouth’s Emergency Management Team (Public Safety, Public Works, Administration, etc.) is working closely with Cumberland County EMA in preparing for Hurricane Lee. Updates will be posted via social media and the town homepage at www.falmouthme.org.

Town of Falmouth Comprehensive Plan Survey
As part of the Comprehensive Plan Update, a final community survey has been mailed to residents; but you are encouraged to take the survey online. Scan the QR code on the printed version or take the survey right now. The survey will help to confirm feedback they received from community workshops and through other engagement activities as well as current Town planning documents (e.g., Bike/Ped Plan, Open Space Plan, future Climate Action Plan).

It's important to get feedback from as many residents as possible to guide planning for Falmouth's future!

Welcoming and Inclusive Schools
We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our new Pre-K and Kindergarten students and families, as well as to the 80+ students and families who are joining Falmouth Schools this year.  

At Falmouth Public Schools we celebrate each individual’s unique identity and inherent potential. New Elementary School Co-Principal
We are pleased to welcome Margaret (Peg) Armstrong as Interim Co-Principal (Grades 3-5) for Falmouth Elementary School.  Peg has served as a Middle and High School Principal, Assistant Superintendent, classroom Spanish teacher and school social worker. She is coming to us most recently from RSU 5 where she has worked for the last 4 years as an Instructional Strategist/ Coach at Durham and Pownal Elementary Schools.  Peg will transition from her position with RSU5 over the next several weeks, and is eager and looking forward to getting started. 

School Breakfast and Lunch
School Breakfast and Lunch will be free of charge to ALL enrolled students of Falmouth Public Schools for 2023-2024.  Please complete a Meals Benefit Application to qualify for other income based financial opportunities such as P-EBT funding, scholarships, fee waivers. It also helps support our school funding from the State of Maine, educational grants, and E-rate.  Please contact Falmouth School Nutrition with questions.

Staying Healthy
Keeping our school staff and students healthy is a priority. We ask that anyone who develops symptoms to please test for COVID before coming to school, and follow the US CDC guidelines for positive cases. If you have any questions, please contact Health Services.

New Staff

We have an exceptional slate of new staff joining us this year, so be on the lookout for more information about these folks in Principal Updates and at start-of-year events.  I am pleased to share the names of a few people in district positions you may encounter in the days ahead:

We are in the process of identifying the right individual to serve as our Interim FES 3-5 Principal. That said, we are incredibly fortunate to have a very strong leadership team at FES, and the school is in great hands. FES 3-5 families can continue to direct questions or concerns to Chelsea Hunnewell and Stacy White.

District Email Communications

We learned earlier this summer that some Falmouth Schools emails had been going directly to SPAM. Our technology department has been working with our Email Provider (GOOGLE)  to address this issue and we know great improvement has occurred.  A text was sent to our families and caregivers encouraging them to check their SPAM folders and mark any emails from Falmouth Schools as 'not spam'. We hope this issue is now resolved.

This year we are looking forward to providing more access to school board meetings and workshops. In order to do this, School Board events will now be held in the High School theater or library.

Good afternoon,,

As we settle into this holiday weekend and look toward the last days of school, I would like to thank everyone who came out on June 13th to vote in support of our 2023-2024 school budget.  The Budget Referendum passed by a wide margin and will allow our staff to dive into preparing our schools for the coming year. 

This month’s School Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20th in the Elementary School Cafeteria (Agenda).  At this meeting, three new members will be welcomed and sworn in: Analiese Larson, Emily Martin, and  Alicia Johnson.  

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 21st (half-day).

Dear Students, Staff, Families and Caregivers,. 

A year ago we were beginning to explore how we could bring our community back into our schools and get our students back out into the community.  Over the past month (with more to come), the concerts and celebrations of learning and art nights and field trips and award ceremonies abound. These events, highlighting the achievements of our students, feel more special than ever. I am so impressed by the vast range of our student’s interests, pursuits, and accomplishments. Their success is truly a testament to the support and investment of our families, our community, and our educators here in Falmouth.    

The Falmouth High School Graduation Ceremony will take place today,  Sunday June 4th. Congratulations students, families, and teachers! This was no easy road, but your accomplishments are heartwarming, humbling, and inspiring. 

This month’s School Board Workshop is scheduled for Monday, June 5th at 7:00 pm in the High School Library.  This workshop is dedicated to recognizing our retiring staff members. The Town of Falmouth will hold the Municipal Election and Budget Validation Referendum on June 13, 2023. All Falmouth Residents are encouraged to vote. Polling will occur at Falmouth High School from 7 a.m.–8 p.m. Information about the election can be found in this week’s Falmouth Focus. The Falmouth School District Budget, approved by the School Board and Town Council, was designed to address the educational needs of the schools, students, and staff.  The budget process extended over 4+ months, involved numerous stakeholders, and included multiple public presentations (see district budget page)

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 21. This is an early-release day for all three schools.

Dear Students, Staff, Families and Caregivers,

Teacher Appreciation Week highlighted that we are honored, every day, to have such amazing professionals in the Falmouth School District. As our Seniors prepare to leave, I personally (and vividly) see, as a parent, the examples set and the lessons taught by so many Falmouth educators over the years carrying our young people forward.

The last official day of school is Wednesday, June 21st.  There are different ‘end of year’ events scheduled  in each school, so families are encouraged to monitor Principals Notes closely this month. 

The May School Board Business Meeting will be held on Monday, May 15th at 7:00 pm in the Falmouth Elementary School Cafeteria.  The agenda (also available on the School Board Meetings page on the district website) includes links to Leadership Team Board Reports, which provide updates about the various schools and departments. Additionally, Monday night’s meeting will include recognition of three Falmouth students:  Maine Career and Technical Education Student of the Year and Maine Presidential Scholars of the Year. 

The League of Women Voters of the Portland Area and the Falmouth Memorial Library, both nonpartisan organizations, are co-sponsoring a live School Board Candidate Forum. This is an opportunity to learn more about the three candidates for School Board prior to the vote on June 13. The forum will be moderated by Sue Robins. The forum will feature the following candidates: Matthew Pines, Jennifer Libby, and Alicia Johnson. Have a question about this event? Email the Portland Area League at portland@lwvme.org. AP Exams are officially over,  the spring athletic season is in high gear, concerts and celebrations abound in the coming days, and it seems the warmer weather is here to stay.

Dear Students, Staff, Families and Caregivers,

60 degrees and sunny was a great way to close out the week, and the clouds held off long enough for some great outdoor High School Prom photos last night!   

As I walked the campus this past week (in both rain and sun), I deeply appreciated the flowers blooming in bursts around all of our buildings.  Over the years, bulbs have been planted on our grounds by our Facilities Crew, Garden and Greenhouse classes, parents, and Falmouth student groups, including the Yellow Tulip Project. The Yellow Tulip Project plants represent happiness and hope, and serve as a reminder that even in our darkest times, hope is always there.  The project’s core mission is to change the stigma around mental health and seeking support for mental health challenges.  

The inspiration of these flowers, in combination with the trials and tragedies that continue to challenge our world, prompted our team to compile some resources for families and individuals in our community.  The new Resources page on our website includes tips for talking with children as well as links to support organizations and crisis lines. We will be adding additional information in the days ahead.  

Monday, May 1st School Board Workshop: Campus Master Plan Presentation (7:00 pm, Falmouth High School Library). At the school board workshop (agenda) on Monday, May 1st,  Oak Point will share the proposed plan for our 125-acre campus. Following the presentation and Board discussion, there will be an opportunity for community questions and feedback. Our goal is to implement a plan that supports our district and community needs, and promotes what is best for our students. Presentation slides will be posted on the website Campus Master Planning page following the event. The school board will formally entertain the Campus Master Plan at its May 15 business meeting.  

Abilities Awareness Week (May 1 - 5, 2023)
Next week is Abilities Awareness Week. We celebrate this week to help our school community better understand diverse abilities and how we can appreciate and celebrate differences.  A huge thank you goes to the Falmouth Elementary School (FES) PTO Abilities Awareness Group, for their work in preparing a week full of inclusive, educational activities for various grade levels and parents/caregivers. 

2023-24 District Calendar
The School Board formally approved the 2023-24 District Calendar at their April Business Business Meeting. At this time, there are four days between the planned last day of school (Wednesday, June 12, 2024) and the June 19 public holiday. We do not have a plan to implement remote learning on inclement weather days; however, we understand there is some interest in reviewing this option and will do so in the months ahead. 

Navs News: Weekly Athletics E-Newsletter
Last week the Athletics Department rolled out Navs News!  Nav News is the Athletic Department’s version of Principal Notes. Each issue of this e-newsletter is delivered across the Falmouth Schools community (parents/caregivers, staff, FMS/FHS students) on Monday mornings throughout the school year. Campus Safety – Be SMART
Ensuring that students, staff and families in Falmouth Schools have a safe educational environment remains a top priority for all of us. Beginning last week, and extending throughout the month of May, we will share Be SMART information about gun safety. Firearms are the leading cause of death of U.S. children and teens, and the District Safety Team, Health Services Team, Falmouth Education Association, Falmouth School Board, and Falmouth Police Department have partnered to share information in support of a safe community for our students and families.

Pre-K Program and Lottery Registration

Town of Falmouth Comprehensive Plan
The Town of Falmouth is updating the community’s Comprehensive Plan. The Plan will be a long-term vision and roadmap for Falmouth’s future and will guide Town decisions on managing growth, investing in capital improvements, and addressing community issues. I encourage you to join the conversation to help our Town develop a Plan that reflects our community’s values. Dear students, staff, parents and caregivers,

MARCH: CHECK DONE!  The sun is with us longer every day, and the crocuses and daffodils are beginning to emerge.  Our playing fields are once again starting to bustle with activity, and planning for spring celebrations and festivities is underway across the schools.  

First, please join us in welcoming Dr. Richard Gowers as permanent Principal of Falmouth High School. Dr. Gowers earned his PhD in U.S. History from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and he taught in Australia and New Zealand before moving to the United States in 2004. Prior to coming to Falmouth in 2022 as interim principal, Richard was principal of the School for Independent Learners in Los Altos, California. Dr. Gowers now considers himself a proud Falmouth Navigator!  

The Superintendent Coffees last week were a helpful part of this feedback process.  I appreciated the opportunity to discuss school spirit, safety, homework, curriculum, and other topics that I continue to reflect on.   Over the next several weeks, I will expand the invitation to our community (students, staff, and parents/caregivers) to share general feedback through a Brief Input Survey - so be on the lookout.

The April School Board Workshop is slated for this coming Monday, April 3rd in the High School Library.  The focus of the workshop this month will be to review and share updates on the Strategic Priorities identified by the district this past fall. Following the workshop, the slides and summary will be posted and shared. The workshop meeting will be preceded by a Special Meeting to allow the Board to entertain a motion on the school budget.  Please see the School Board Page of the website for agendas and additional information.

Over the next several weeks, many Falmouth families will be taking time away from school to celebrate a number of holidays.  Passover begins on April 5th.  Good Friday is on the 7th and Easter the 9th. Orthodox Easter is on April 16th this year. Ramadan concludes during the break with Eid al-Fitr on April 21st.   As always, we aspire to honor and accommodate all staff, students and families as you take part in these important days.

April Vacation begins on Friday, April 14th. 

Finally, a thank-you to our music teachers and students across the district for giving us two amazing concerts this month.  If, on this last day of March, you need a little lift to get you into spring, please take a couple of moments to listen to our chorus students from all three schools across the district sing We are the Voices.  This piece says it all.

For those celebrating – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

A Falmouth Schools spring highlight is on deck for this weekend! This Sunday, March 19th, Falmouth’s Got Talent will be held at 2:00 pm (Grades 1-3) and 4:00 pm (Grades 4-12) in the FHS Theater. This annual K-12 friendly competition features a showcase of student talents across the grade levels in front of a supportive audience. Proceeds benefit the Class of ‘23 Project Graduation. Tickets for the 4:00 pm show are sold out, but tickets are available for the 2:00 pm performance. 

Planning for the FY 23-24 School budget has been ongoing since December.  At this time our Budget page has been updated with slides from the January 3rd and February 6th School Board Workshops, and the detailed FY2024 Proposed Budget. Also on the Budget Page is the complete budget calendar with upcoming dates of meetings and presentations.

The March School Board Business Meeting will be held this coming Monday, March 20th, at 7:00 pm in the Elementary School Cafeteria (Agenda). At this meeting the Board will conduct a first read of the 2023-24 Calendar.

Dear students, staff, parents and caregivers,

I hope the winter break was restorative. It seems our traditional Maine winter has finally arrived, and this weekend’s storm suggests that we’ll be keeping our shovels, mittens, and sleds handy for a while longer. Stay safe and warm!

If you haven’t yet had a chance to read the article in the Northern Forecaster from a week or so ago, I strongly encourage you to check it out: Falmouth students gaining wisdom from OceanView residents (Northern Forecaster, Feb 7, 2023). The Wisdom Tea program, started by our Service Learning Coordinator Holly MacEwan 20 years ago, truly embodies our district mission: Navigating Creative Pathways to courageous, compassionate, and fulfilling lives. For two decades our students and community elders have listened to one another's stories and perspectives, gained insight into times past and times present, laughed, played games, and built long-lasting friendships.  

From the Growing Valentines Project undertaken by our Elementary School Students in order to deliver beautiful fresh flowers to our area Seniors before break, to the Falmouth Tri-M Music Honor Society concert to benefit Preble Street held at FHS last night, our students learn, and give much, through the ongoing service endeavors in our schools. 

Warm wishes to those celebrating holidays this coming week. The Hindu holiday Holi (March 7–8), also known as the Festival of Color, honors the arrival of spring as well as love, happiness, and renewal. Also next week are the Jewish holiday Purim and the Muslim holiday Layat al Bara’at.  If you are interested in learning more about the holidays and observances acknowledged by our Falmouth Schools community members, please visit the Multicultural Calendar on our website. 

Spring Conferences are held this month in each of the schools.  Conferences are a great opportunity to connect with teachers,  learn more about your child(ren)’s learning, and to share your insights and questions.  We look forward to seeing many of you in our schools this month, and also encourage you to please always reach out to your child’s teacher or school with questions or concerns.

And Happy Lunar New Year. This coming Sunday marks the end of the celebration period that began on January 21st.  2023 is the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac.   

Please take care tomorrow and over the weekend and safeguard against the forecasted Extreme Cold Weather.  In case you did not see the notice posted by the Town of Falmouth about Warming Centers: 

The Town of Falmouth has partnered with Falmouth Congregational United Church of Christ to provide a daytime and overnight warming center at the Church (267 Falmouth Road) from Friday, February 3 at 10:00 am to Sunday, February 5 at 12:00 pm for anyone who needs shelter from the severe cold temperatures. This center will be opened based on demand. Individuals and families needing shelter should call the Falmouth Communications Center at 207-781-2300 before traveling to the warming center so appropriate accommodations can be made. Additional daytime warming centers are available at Falmouth Memorial Library (5 Lunt Road) on Friday and Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and at Family Ice Center (20 Hat Trick Drive) from 6:00 am to midnight each day. Family Ice Center will open both the indoor arena and Twombly Pond warming hut.  For a list of other area warming centers visit: https://www.maine.gov/mema/response-recovery/mass-care

The request submitted by Falmouth Public Schools to have Friday, November 18th be waived as a required school day has been approved by the state. We do not need to make that day up at the end of the year, and the district will not have to sustain the additional unanticipated costs associated with doing so. To date, we have had two (2) snow days, and the last day of school is currently slated to be Friday, June 16th.

The facilitator for the evening will be Dave Packhem, Founder and Executive Director of Students Empowered to End Dependency (SEED), a group of school and community organizations that collaborated over the past three years to produce Voices of Hope, a documentary series on addiction that began airing on WGME-13 in the spring of 2021. Join Falmouth Public Schools and Master Planning consultants Oak Point Associates for a community conversation to guide planning of our 125-acre campus for the next decade and beyond.  Our goal is to create a plan that supports our district and community needs, and promotes what is best for our students.

Why is campus master planning important?   Current challenges include age and wear of facilities and infrastructure, and program expansion and staff to serve evolving student needs. Proactive planning avoids costly, reactive decisions.

What does the planning process look like? 

• Gather data, input, and feedback from all stakeholders 
• Optimize campus design for security, accessibility, functionality, sustainability, efficiency, aesthetics, and mental well-being, while considering benefits to the broader community

With yesterday and today’s unexpected snow (despite the Weather Channel’s continued prediction that it would turn to rain . . . .) - It’s officially December in Maine!  

The holidays kick off this weekend, beginning with the first night of Hanukkah tomorrow, on Sunday the 18th.  The winter solstice, the official beginning of the winter season and the shortest day of the year, is on the 21st.   Christmas (now perhaps more likely to be snowy white?) falls a week from Sunday on the 25th; and Kwanzaa celebrations begin on the 26th.   The New Year is in sight!

I hope the days ahead offer some rest & relaxation, a bit of fun, and good health.

Dear Falmouth Schools Families, Caregivers, and Staff,

Shortly before the formal start of the school day for Falmouth Middle and High Schools, the Falmouth Police Department (FPD) received information about an online threat specifically targeting Falmouth Schools. Out of an abundance of caution, and in collaboration with FPD, I  made the decision to close our schools for the day. 

The FPD sent additional support to our campus within minutes of learning about the threat, and their team began working immediately with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other local law enforcement agencies to identify the source of the threat. At this time, they have determined the threat to be a hoax and not credible.

 The timing of the threat, when students and staff were in transit and just beginning to arrive in our schools, presented an array of challenges which our school administrators and staff successfully negotiated. Our students and staff are to be commended for their calm and helpfulness. I cannot thank our parents, families and caregivers enough for their cooperation and patience as we worked to return students safely home today.  

 I want to thank the Falmouth Police Department for their immediate and professional response to this situation, and for their ongoing collaboration and dedicated support to our schools. The ongoing partnership between Falmouth Schools and the Falmouth Police Department is an invaluable part of keeping our schools and community safe. 

School activities on campus will resume tomorrow (for those programs with Saturday events), and we will return to school on Monday with all normal safety protocols in place.   

 You can find emergency numbers and contact information for Student Services Team members in each building on our Student Services Website Page, and don’t hesitate to reach out to building administrators as needed. Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Families and Caregivers,

The Spirit Weeks at both the Middle and High School these past few weeks culminated in successful dances in both schools, and the student council groups and faculty advisors/chaperones are to be commended for their efforts.  A huge shout-out also goes to our FES PTO and the Elementary School administration and staff for an awesome 2nd (hopefully) annual Harvest Festival.  

In addition to welcoming parents back for conferences with an in-person option next week, we are also looking forward to welcoming the community to the Veteran’s Day Assembly put on by the Falmouth High School Band,Chorus, and Jazz groups (see information below). This is an important opportunity for us to pause and express our gratitude for the members of our community (staff, caregivers, parents and grandparents) and beyond, who have served, and continue to serve our country.

We have also started planning a Community Conversation around our district equity and inclusion work. Our goal is to foster a learning environment where every child feels welcome, safe, and able to express themselves. We know there are questions and a desire to collaborate. It is important for us to create an opportunity to share information and hear the perspectives of our students, staff, parents, and caregivers. Stay tuned for more information once we have rounded the bend of conferences and settle on a date that works best.

Dear Students, Staff, Families and Caregivers,

On Monday, October 17 the Falmouth School Board voted unanimously in favor of a motion to adjust the 2022-2023 School Calendar to eliminate remote learning days. Should there be school closures due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances this year, we will add in-person learning days to the calendar in June. 

The updated 2022-2023 Falmouth School Calendar is attached and available online.

Why was this change made to the calendar? 

In conversations with the School Board, the District Leadership Team, and Falmouth Education Association (FEA) Leaders, a number of important concerns were raised that led to this determination: 

• Teachers and families/caregivers have questioned whether remote days have learning value equal to remote days, and also highlighted the value of ‘letting kids be kids’ on real snow days (e.g. letting them go out and play in the snow).

• Teachers and families/caregivers have shared the challenge that real snow days come with additional demands (shoveling, arranging childcare, etc.) that make the addition of schoolwork difficult.

• Teachers and families/caregivers (all levels) have expressed concern about children who do not have the skills to self-manage in the remote context, and may not have parental oversight to support schoolwork. 

• Not being in school necessarily means some special education students are not able to access learning.  

• Teachers have expressed concern that students would need to be ‘retaught’ how to engage effectively in remote learning.

• Some Falmouth families/caregivers have expressed that they seem to always lose power in storms even when many others do not. Teachers who do not live in Falmouth have also expressed concern about their homes not having power (even though Falmouth might).

• Families/caregivers have shared concerns about sending technology devices (Ipads) home with Falmouth Elementary School (FES) students. The option of creating additional hard copy packets for students each month creates significant work for staff.

• In June 2022, the federal waiver allowing districts to continue receiving nutrition reimbursements while operating ‘non-traditionally’ expired and was not renewed. As a result, we are no longer able to receive reimbursement for school lunch or breakfast meal costs on remote learning days. 

We acknowledge that mid–year calendar changes are never ideal and that some families may have made plans for the projected school year-end  based on the current calendar. We encourage those families/caregivers to share their plans with the appropriate school(s) if we end up having make-up days in June that students will be unable to attend.

Dear Staff, Students, Parents and Guardians,

We are a month into school and the busy hum on our campus continues.  In addition to the welcome return of families and guardians to our schools for Open Houses and as volunteers, another celebratory highlight of this year is the opportunity once again for our students once to learn and serve outside the ‘walls’ of the campus.  Our 6th Grade students have returned to Camp Kieve to deepen their collaboration and leadership skills, our High School Art students have sought the color and inspiration of our regional agricultural fair, and our grade 2 students will head out to learn about our coastal tidal pools next week. Many more plans are in the works.

Campus Master Planning:  Thank you to the families, guardians, and staff who attended our first Community Master Planning Workshop this past week. The facilities committee and design team took away a number of important ideas and insights to inform the work ahead. We will continue to update the website’s Campus Master Planning Page as we move through the process. Additional community workshops will be announced in the coming weeks.

Strategic Plan & Pre-K Exploration: Please join us for an informational workshop and community discussion on our proposed strategic plan: Setting the Course for 2022 & Beyond, The first portion of the evening will focus on our priorities around Curriculum, Social Emotional Learning, and Communication/Connection.  The second part of the evening will focus on the Exploration of Pre-K Programming for Falmouth Public Schools.  Please join us on Monday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Elementary School Cafeteria (during the regularly scheduled School Board Workshop).  The official agenda can be found on the website’s School Board Meeting Page.

Flu Clinics on Campus:  Falmouth School District is partnering with Northern Light Home Care & Hospice to provide an influenza vaccination clinic during school hours to students. This will be the only student  flu shot clinic that will be at the schools this year. (There will be no evening clinics this year). We are requiring pre-registration for this event. If you would like your child to receive an influenza vaccine please complete the appropriate registration form below by Thursday, October 6th.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Guardians –

It’s been great to feel the energy of everyone back in school - attending classes, ice cream socials, athletic competitions, meetings, and myriad other events.  The energy and excitement level of parents and guardians back in the buildings for Open Houses has been almost as high as it was for students on the first day of school!  Suffice to say, it feels great to have students and families back on campus with all of our fall activities and programs in full swing. 

We have more than 80 new staff members joining Falmouth Schools this year, coming from near and far; and are thrilled with the knowledge, experience, and creativity they bring to our schools.  Also exciting is the energy and ideas of the PTO groups formed or forming in each of our schools.  There are great plans for the days ahead!

Thank you for your patience as we work out the start-of-school schedule, transportation, and other blips that inevitably present themselves at the start of a new school year. 

We are ready to look forward!  We spent last year reflecting, capturing data and feedback, and working in teams to develop our Proposed Strategic Priorities: Setting the Course for 2022 & Beyond. The five identified priority areas include:

1. Campus Facilities: Falmouth Schools will develop and implement a campus facilities master plan that supports our Guiding Principles

2. Connected Community: Falmouth Schools will be a place where staff, students, and community members communicate and collaborate effectively

3. Social-Emotional Learning: Falmouth Schools will integrate and foster Social Emotional Learning that supports readiness to learn and wellness 

4. Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment: Falmouth Schools will articulate an aligned program of curriculum and instruction driven by our Vision for Falmouth Students 

5. Pre-Kindergarten: Falmouth Schools will investigate and plan for a Pre-K program that meets the needs of our community and integrates effectively into our schools

Dear Falmouth School Community Members,

While summer continues to offer the best of Maine, the Leadership Team and staff across the district are busy preparing for the year ahead: Crews are wrapping up renovation projects, outfitting new portable classrooms, waxing floors and settling furniture. Teachers are meeting to collaborate on curriculum, ensure student schedules are in place, and organize welcome sessions for students and guardians. Our leadership team just completed several intensive days reviewing operational protocols and planning for the start of the year.

We are thrilled to welcome some new faces to our district leadership and central office teams. We’ll be highlighting these individuals and sharing more information about these folks in our website news updates in the days to come:.

We are also excited about the highly-qualified and dynamic teachers and support staff we have added to our team this year. Falmouth continues to attract outstanding individuals to work with our young people. That said, as with many other districts, we continue to have unfilled positions. We are working diligently at this and are developing creative ways to recruit and retain the right individuals to join our staff. Qualified applicants are always welcome to apply.

The upcoming August School Board business meeting will be held in person on Monday, August 15th at 7pm in the FES cafeteria (agenda here).  

All staff will return to campus on Friday, August 26th, and we will reconnect through a discussion of Summer Reading Books. If you haven’t had a chance to check out this year’s titles, it’s a great list!  

 We look forward to greeting our students back to campus at the end of the month. Please note, due to the way the calendar falls, the first days of school are before Labor Day this year:  Wednesday, August 31st (for grades 1-9), and Thursday, September 1st (for grades K-12 ).  Principals have begun to share detailed information and schedules, so be on the lookout for their communications. 

Falmouth Public Schools is currently a mask-optional environment. We encourage and fully support all to follow the mask wearing practices that make them feel most comfortable. Individuals choosing to wear a mask for any reason should feel empowered to do so. We encourage all members of our community to continue to cover your cough, wash your hands regularly, and stay home if you are sick. Principals and our Health Services Team will be sharing more information in the days to come.

We are so looking forward to our quiet campus once again being filled with the energy and learning of our youngest community members.
