SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWS
Chaperones/Drivers Needed for Furniture Friends Deliveries
The Falmouth Schools have been working with our community partner, Furniture Friends for more than ten years. Many FHS students over the years have volunteered with them and have had rewarding and enlightening experiences.
-
We take a group of 8 students every other Thursday afternoon after school.
-
We leave FHS at 2:30 pm and return at approximately 5:30 pm.
I chaperone and drive students on most Furniture Friends trips. My car carries 4 passengers in addition to me. We are in need of additional drivers/chaperones. I have to say it is a wonderful way to spend time with students and get to witness different strengths. If you are interested in potentially helping in this way, please let me know.
Here is a video that includes some former students: Furniture Friends Video
Drivers need to turn in a copy of their driver's license (background check) and proof of insurance with the superintendent's office. Furniture Friends requires all volunteers to be vaccinated and to be masked when we go into people's homes.
Thank you for considering. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Holly MacEwan, Service Learning Coordinator
FURNITURE FRIENDS UPDATE
Falmouth High School Community would like to thank everyone who donated household cleaning supplies and personal care products to fill 25 beautiful bags that will be given to the individuals and families served by Furniture Friends.
FRESHMAN CLASS CLOTHING DRIVE
We want to thank and celebrate the Freshman Executive Board and all who donated items to the Winter Clothing Drive. Items, like those below, were collected through our Freshman Advisory classes, and are on their way to Maine Needs. Thank you!

Habitat for Humanity requires volunteers to be at least 16 years old.
If you have any questions contact Holly MacEwan hmacewan@falmouthschools.org or Jen Bush jennifer.bush@falmouthschools.org
Students Adventures in Learning (SAiL)
Student Adventures in Learning (SAiL) is a 2-3 day program that provides Falmouth High School students a chance to explore and learn something not typically taught in school and improve leadership skills. Students, with the help of faculty and community members, will be able to lead sessions on topics they are passionate about. Previous sessions include a wide variety of topics including overnight hiking trips, special effects makeup, biking the Eastern Trail, archery, writer's workshops, salsa dancing, dog training, wilderness first aid, etc. SAiL is now accepting this year's session proposals!
We need 60 sessions by December 22, 2022, for SAiL to run. Please consider leading a session.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NAVS FOOTBALL TEAM!
With all the events of last week, I overlooked a message that I had planned to share. I want to extend my congratulations to our Football team for their run to the regional championship game. They did not win the game but not every victory can be on the field, some are behind the scenes – in the way the team conducted themselves and the enthusiasm that they generated for the program among our community. No question the team scored a huge victory on that front. Well done to all the players and the coaches for their successful year…Go Navs!
COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL:

Cubesat
We are fortunate to have many great clubs at our school so I am not trying to play favorites…but I want to highlight the first meeting of Cubesat in Room 125 on Monday, November 28th, during AFT. Our work has already resulted in the selection of a scientific mission for MESAT-1 and this group will continue with the analysis of this data as well as expanding their own research ideas. This is USM's 3rd annual which introduces students to the engineering design process and promotes creativity and critical thinking skills through application in a fun and challenging experience. Each team will work with USM staff to develop, plan, execute and deliver a small satellite, capable of launching to 100,000+ ft using a high-altitude balloon in May.
SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWS

By December 9th, we are attempting to fill twenty grocery-sized bags full of household cleaners and personal care products for our most vulnerable Greater Portland Community families. You may drop off your donations into the box located in the FHS Front Lobby -- or direct your gift cards to Service Learning. We will remind you weekly. Class of 2023 Families:
The Class of 2023 graduation is a little over 200 days away. It’s time to plan for Senior Week and Project Grad! We are looking for a few amazing volunteers to step up on the planning committee and help ensure an unforgettable senior week and project graduation for the Class of 2023. If this is your first senior, Senior Celebration is a special series of events and traditions which take place the week leading up to graduation. It ends with Project Graduation at an off-site, undisclosed location to ensure our seniors have a safe and fun graduation night. Senior Week and Project Grad are 100% self-funded and fundraising is a critical part of this process. Most of the funds are raised by parents and the generosity of businesses in the Falmouth and Greater Portland area. Co-Chairs - Lisa Saulter: lsaulter207@gmail.com and Jen Wahlig: jwahlig@icloud.com.
Important ASKS:
#1 Fill Out the Senior Parent/Caregiver Form - Due to privacy restrictions, the FHS is not able to share the student list and your contact information. Please take a few minutes to complete this form. We will use this to communicate with you, create digital permission forms and streamline fundraising and volunteer opportunities.
#2 Attend the Senior Celebration Volunteer Meeting on Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30 PM FHS Library. If you cannot attend, but wish to volunteer, fill out the form above.

National Honors Society It was my privilege to be present for the induction ceremony of our newest NHS members. It was great to see these accomplished students be celebrated for their academic and community focus and to learn about the role that they will play in the school year ahead. We are going to be benefiting from the leadership that these students will undoubtedly play in our society when they graduate.
Corn hole tournament The first annual Corn hole tournament took place this week and my congratulations to our winners: Chris Morin and Tyla Forbes. They were a dynamic duo who were just too good on the day! I was happy to participate and I have a range of excuses for the fact that I could not produce my best performance. I’m pretty sure the air conditioning in the gym was affecting my tosses specifically. But a great tournament nevertheless!

- Vomiting – in the last 24-hour period.

ACTIVITIES
With the recommencement of the school year, this seems like an opportune time to reflect on a key schedule change and the scope of our school day. It may seem like an odd thing to state at the outset, but First period for students is at 8 a.m. and the day ends at 2:20. On our bell schedule, you’ll see AFT/Advisory/Activity at the end of each day, from 1:50-2:20. This is a key piece of the support services we offer for students. AFT (or academic focus time) is an opportunity for students to seek academic help from their teachers or from the tutoring center. It is held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Activity is when our students can meet for clubs – there is a long list here of groups which are open for our students on Thursdays. And Advisory is held each Tuesday and facilitates the integration of our social, emotional wellness curriculum into our school. Maybe even more so now that we are returning from our Covid-effected educations, our mutual well-being and wider sense of community are critical areas of our focus at our school. A strong culture is built through connections and can work as a first buffer for our students as they learn to navigate not only school but wider social issues. We hold Advisory as a crucial piece of this work.
For the first 10 days of our school, our last period will be entirely devoted to Advisory and throughout the year, unless our Juniors and Seniors have earned privileges, FHS students are required to attend. Privileges for students who are eligible will begin on Monday, September 19.
And, if that was a little too logistical for you… no worries…it will make sense when you join us for Open House on September 14 and you can walk in your student’s shoes through their schedule. Well, walk quickly and, please be assured, you will not be quizzed on content knowledge in any classroom! And, myself and Vicki Decker, our Assistant Principal will be here too if you want to drop by and chat. You can see a schedule for Open House here.
